In this workshop, writers will analyze “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou. Using this as a reference point, they will free journal to see what natural metaphor is rising within. This could be animals, the cosmos, water, earth, fire, etc. Once the metaphor has been discovered they will craft a full poem with the central point being the natural metaphor.
Gabriela Llarena is a Cuban/Filipino artist who specializes in acting and poetry. Receiving her BFA from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, she studied poetry in Paris, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, and Havana. Gabriela is associated with the artist group Working Titles based out of New York, with whom she published her first chapbook “The Things She Left Behind,” and is an Artist-in-Residence at Self Designs Art Gallery in Downtown Sacramento. In 2021, her love of poetry led Gabriela to begin taking commissions for personalized poems for all occasions including: wedding favors, friendships, Valentine’s Day, birthdays/anniversaries, and remembrance poetry for those in grief. Alongside commissions, Gabriela focuses on mentorship to create accessibility to poetry for all. Between workshops in person and over zoom and one-on-one 8 month mentorships, Gabriela has led those of all ages to feel confidence in their poetic ability.
